Overview
Chickenpox (varicella) is very contagious. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It causes a blister-like rash, itching, fatigue and fever. Rash can spread over the entire body and cause hundreds of itchy blisters. The rash can appear anywhere on the body.
Chickenpox can be serious—especially during pregnancy, in babies, adults and people with weakened immune systems. The best way to prevent chickenpox is to get vaccinated.
Chickenpox is not a notifiable condition. Providers typically do not need to report chickenpox.
